How confused am I right now?

To me these questions will NEVER make sense because I have never considered myself nor my people in terms of race because these arbitrary categories inherently mean something completely different. When I see white, I automatically associate it with Caucasian. And as with Black — African / African-American. If you ask me my skin color, it may lean towards the lighter side. But in no way does the color of my skin or the skin color of other Latinos dictate how I see them as people and how they succeed in this country. Sure, Latin America and the Caribbean has loads of “race” issues on its own (damn you, colonialism, for making race THIS important), but why will nationality/origin in this country of immigrants never be enough?
And this brings up another point: stop asking me for my “race” when I will never be considered an American. I may be called Latino, Latin/o-American, but why do I need to say what color I am when I will called whatever you say I am? That reminds me of a quote by Toni Morrison:

In this country American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate.

That is why I much prefer to solely identify with my nationality/origin and not this idea of race. It’s much more tangible, direct, and non-discriminatory.
